As part of the Art Institute of Portland’s Sustainability Program, students in the Environmental Science class were asked to redesign an aspect of Portland in preparation for the exponential projected population growth over the next 50 years. The concept for this student group was to create a community fitness center that generates its own energy as well as for the surrounding neighborhood. The goal of this project was to create a model for a localized energy grid so that individuals are not reliant on energy sources derived from fossil fuels.
This project purposes harnessing energy from fitness gym equiptment as well as solar collectors on the roof. A converter captures the energy and converts it to usable electricity that the gym will use to feed their electricity needs and the neighborhoods that want to be connected to the gym’s grids. We believe that this innovation will help Portland residents live healthy and safe lives. Statistics show that the kilowatts produced in a number of gyms are enough to power multiple households.
